Background
Through the JMU SMAD program, I was tasked with designing a Hi-Fi Prototype for an app I wish existed.
Problem
As a sophomore, I found it hard to find places to eat off campus as I had been required to live on-campus as a freshman- where there was always a dining hall. I wanted an easier way to locate breakfast establishments specifically, as it is my favorite meal.
Design Questions
-What factors lead to a user choosing to try a new restaurant?
-How might food preference contribute to a user’s choice in a restaurant.
-What are the user’s breakfast habits and how often do they eat out?
THE PROCESS
I formed a research group of 6 people, college students being the primary focus group, with the goal of forming two personas.
Research found users were generally most interested in price, location, pictures of food, and restaurant aesthetics.
The findings presented several differing preferences as well, in which users often fell strongly one way or the other, so I used Attribute Scales to measure the responses.
I also collected individual quotes that highlighted each user’s priorities when it came to choosing breakfast restaurants.
Primary Persona: The Diligent Student
Secondary Persona: The Adventurous Connoisseur
THE PRODUCT
I designed 3 key features based on the website/app functions most referenced by users for restaurant browsing:
A rating/reviews section for each restaurant, as well as exterior links to Yelp.
Photographs of the food and restaurant interior/exterior.
A Maps feature tied to Google Maps.
Price and sound were also commonly mentioned, so I added price indicator and average sound-level icons.
