Background

Through the JMU SMAD program, I was tasked with designing a Hi-Fi Prototype for an app I wish existed.

What factors lead to a user choosing to try a new restaurant?

Problem

As a sophomore, I found it hard to find places to eat off campus as I had been required to live on-campus as a freshman- where there was always a dining hall. I wanted an easier way to locate breakfast establishments specifically, as it is my favorite meal.

Design Questions

What are the user’s breakfast habits and how often do they eat out?

How might food preference contribute to a user’s choice in a restaurant.

Research:

I formed a research group of 6 people, college students being the primary focus group, with the goal of forming two personas.

The findings indicated quite a few preferences in which users fell strongly one way or the other, so I used Attribute Scales to measure these extremes.

I also focused on individual quotes that offered various perspectives- Some of which prompted by user questions, others I hadn’t expected.

Research found users were most interested in price, location, pictures of food, and restaurant aesthetics.

Prototype Design

I designed 3 key features based on the website/app functions most referenced by users for restaurant browsing:

  1. A rating/reviews section for each restaurant, as well as exterior links to Yelp.

  2. Photographs of the food and restaurant interior/exterior.

  3. A Maps feature tied to Google Maps.

Price and sound were also commonly mentioned, so I added price indicator and average sound-level icons.
